Figures released by the TCS Sydney Marathon revealed that 293.5kg of gel packets were collected across its 42km course this year, after a record 36,296 runners crossed the finish line.
The discovery gives some idea of just how common the running aid has become, with organisers handing out nearly 70,000 GU energy gels during the race alone.
News of the massive discarded wrapper haul comes after Melbourne man Flynn Martin told Yahoo Lifestyle that he was becoming increasingly frustrated by the amount of gel packets that he sees left on footpaths and running trails.
âYou think you can do whatever you want because youâre doing this incredible [run] that basically rants you permission to do whatever you want to do.â
âIf youâre doing it on your own or [at] a semi-professional level, no oneâs gonna pick up after you.â
